Anti-depressants and Pregnancy

Women have become quite prone to antidepressants. Pregnant women find it quite difficult to manage control over these drugs because of constant fear of relapse; a relapse that might have bad repercussions on baby in the womb. Most of the working women resort to SSRIs to counter tension in daily life. However, it is significant to note that SSRIs could result in miscarriages too. In fact, studies have revealed that the risk of miscarriage doubles in women due to constant dose of SSRI. SSRI refers to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor useful in controlling mental stress.

Taking antidepressants has also proved harmful for the child in mother’s womb. The child is likely to develop symptoms of autism. It’s a nervous disease that affects the central part of the body, snatching away personal power to understand things clearly and precisely. Studies have revealed that mothers taking antidepressants might have children at higher risks of autism.

Babies are likely to be afflicted by persistent hypertension in case mothers are relying on heavy doses of SSRIs. The risk to get the disease is likely to escalate in the last trimester of pregnancy. The infants might become an easy victim of neonatal abstinence syndrome if mothers took antidepressants during pregnancy. The child might find discomfort due to disturbed sleep disorder, gastrointestinal problem and regular shivers. Studies have also revealed that mothers on SSRIs might see low birth weight of child. The child’s weight is likely to fall in case mother is heavily dependent on these medicines.

The increased risk to the child during pregnancy has brought in light the increased consequences of antidepressants. SSRIs are safe in some cases, however; harmful for child during pregnancy. The increase in birth deficiencies has escalated in recent times with antidepressants considered one of the major factors in such cases.

Tips to follow after dog bite

My brother was recently bitten by a stray dog while jogging in the lanes of locality. The dog was, but obviously, not immunized. What could you possibly do under such situation? There are some tips I’d like to share while facing this situation:

1. Rush to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. If the area around the bite reddens, it will worsen the patient’s condition.

2. Get the injured area thoroughly cleaned by a medical professional. This implies cleaning the wound, removing the blood and dirt.

3. Get the bandage done and keep it covered for at least two hours. If the wound is not serious, you can remove after an hour too.

4. Immunize yourself with tetanus and anti-rabies injection. Doctors advise for tetanus first with a few minutes interval for the next injection.

5. Make sure you follow the course of medication. Take prescribed medicines like paracetamol and antibiotics as per schedule. A course of five anti-rabies injections is required for a month on a weekly basis.

6. If the blood or water continues to ooze after removal, give a compression. This implies removing the fluid with a dry cotton.

7. You can use bentadine ointment to start the healing process.

8. Make sure you throw the removed bandage or cotton in safe area away from the reach of children.

9. It is very important to give rest to the body part for a period of two or more days depending upon the injury.

10. It is also significant to let the injured area dry as much as possible. Give a lot of exposure to air of the surroundings. This would help in quick healing of wound.

11. There is no advice regarding diet, however; it is best to take vitamin and protein enriched food and drinks.

These tips could help a lot in case caution is exercised. If the dog bite is really serious, the doctor could advise for hospitalization. Make sure you follow the right schedule to recuperate from dog bite.

Increase in body weight, inconsistent sitting postures, improper diet, diabetes and birth defects are some other reasons that can drive the person towards the ailment.

Junk food is a complete no for people suffering from OA. Sudden jerks and heavy lifts must be avoided. People with ailments of low bone density and osteoporosis must be extra careful. People with heredity of OA must exercise extra care too. Joint guards or knee pads must be worn while jumping or playing game. Yoga can be opted instead of cardio or gym exercises.

It is very important to improvise diet habits so that body does not have to suffer the onslaught of any ailment. Eating citrus fruits like lime and orange which have high content of Vitamin C is quite effective. Improving calcium intake with increased intake of milk and yogurt in diet can increase the bone density. Hot soaks or paraffin use is quite effective while in pain. Winters are worse for joints so care must be exercised. Avoiding joint exercises is also advised.

Keeping a healthy diet free of oil and fatty acids and making minimal use of lifting weights can help cure OA at a faster pace.

Body Butter- A Winter Cosmetic

A number of reasons have made body butter a must in cosmetic kit while on travel or at home. It not only nourishes the skin and keeps it healthy but maintains the tone and texture too. A variety of body butters are up in market; however, selection must be based on the type of skin that you have-normal, dry or oily. It is important to note that body butter is only for body and not for face. If applied on face, it might damage the tissues causing break outs and allergies.

While opting for any cosmetic, it is important to know that body butter is applied only in winters. If there is lot of travelling or outdoor visits then using SPF based body butter is better. At the same time, very small quantity must be applied on hands, arms and legs. Body butter can do wonders to body areas like elbows, neck, hands, knees and feet too. It varies in content for day and night. The former has lighter consistency than the latter.

The most common body butter used is organic body butter which is eco-friendly in nature. Prepared purely from organic butter, it is quite suitable for oily skin.

The body butter prepared either from lavender oil or cocoa are good for combination skins which are neither too oily nor too dry. The chocolate body butter is used before retiring to bed. It hydrates the skin overnight by destroying the free radicals in order to even out the skin tone. It is quite apt for normal and dry skin.

Shea body butter is prepared from fruits of Shea tree. It contains cinnamic acid that is vital in protecting against the harmful sun rays and ideal for dry skin. Body butters are also available in combination. For instance, butter made of soy milk and honey mixed with Jojoba and Shea oils.

Body butter is good for all types of skins. However, depending on ingredients, it differs for different skins. Thus, there must be a cautious approach so that it does not damage the tone and texture of the skin.

Osteoporosis- degeneration in bone density

Osteoporosis starts showing its effect as we start aging. The bones begin to lose density. It is found more in women compared to men. About 30-35% of women suffer from this disease compared to 20-30% of men. It grows in a gradual and sustained manner showing its effect after the age of 30.

One of the main reasons of losing bone density is the continual use of hydrogenated fats in daily diets. Increased use of such oils, iodized salts, sugar, white bread, white rice, processed food, aerated drinks and hot beverages can lead to reduction of calcium in human body. Their use is acidic in nature giving rise to acidosis. Acidosis is responsible for increasing the alkalinity by reducing calcium present in the body.

If calcium is considered the main mineral requirement to do away with osteoporosis then there is need of other mineral supplements too. Magnesium is another important mineral that needs to be adequately sustained to keep out osteoporosis. Vitamin D aids in effective use of calcium. 1.5 grams of phosphorus and .5 grams of magnesium help create one gram of calcium.

Thus, it is important to take calcium rich diets which can help maintain bones and cartilages. Natural foods like milk, yogurt, spinach, carrot, ginger, turmeric, orange and almonds are quite effectual and have long-lasting impact on bone structures if taken on a regular basis.

The q-switched ruby and other pigmented lesion lasers are opted to remove the dark areas on the skin.

Bleaches are often put into application to reduce the production of melanin. An active ingredient called hydroquinone is present in bleach to lighten the patches and bring it back to normal skin tone. The results can be obtained at a faster pace. Bleach containing tretinoin and cortisone can take few months to show improvement.

At home, a paste of turmeric powder and yellow gram flour can be prepared and used on the affected areas. The solution can be used twice a day. It is advisable not to move outdoors or expose yourself to sun immediately after using the home remedy.
